Martha Strasser

A german merchant family in Wuhan/China

„I still felt such a close link to China and her people, as I felt so „at home“ as a child growing up there. My parents, through their behaviour and their Christian charity, showed me how a peaceful, harmonious life with other races and cultures is possible. I grew up tri-lingual; we spoke German at home, the neighbours’ children spoke English and I learned Chinese from the age of three from our Amah.“

Martha Strasser recalls her memoirs of childhood and youth in Wuhan, China; succeeding in her desire to illustrate for her children and grandchildren the life of their great grandparents on the Klein side of the family, whom they never knew personally.

After her husband was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer in 1971, her life changed dramatically. She was a founding member of the Bavarian Laryngectomee Society and devoted herself entirely to her work with laryngectomy patients. This led her to make several journeys to China, where she was not only able to pass on her extensive knowledge and experience in the fi eld, but also to follow the more personal trails leading back to the home she knew as a child.
